How to monetize a Hytale server

What Hytale's server policy lets you sell, the rules for paid loot boxes, what is banned on every server, and why the revenue share is 0% until 2028.

You can charge for cosmetics, subscriptions, server access, donations, gameplay-affecting items and even paid loot boxes on a Hytale server. Each model comes with conditions, and a few things are banned on every server: real-money gambling, NFTs and token schemes. Hypixel Studios currently takes nothing from your revenue. The revenue share is 0% until January 13, 2028.

The rules live in the Hytale Server Operator Policies. This guide follows version 1.1, effective January 13, 2026, and the Hytale EULA (version 2.3, same date), which incorporates the policy and spells out some of the rules in more detail.

Warning

Hypixel can update the policy at any time, and running your server after a new effective date counts as accepting it. Before you launch a product, open the official page and check that it still says version 1.1.

Regular servers and Listed Servers

The policy has two layers. Baseline rules apply to anyone who hosts a Hytale server. Servers that want to appear in Discovery, the official in-game server browser, take on extra obligations.

Discovery shipped with Update 5 on May 26, 2026. You submit a server from the Server Profiles section of your Hytale account. According to the official server lists announcement, every profile goes through manual moderation, and you can verify your domain with a TXT record. The 1.1 policy text still says Listed Servers are "currently not available"; the Update 5 notes are newer.

To be listed, a server must publish working links to its website or store, privacy policy, refund policy and support contact. It must respond to urgent safety reports within 24 hours where reasonably practicable, and declare an audience: All Ages, Teen or Mature. The listing form calls the first one Everyone.

Cosmetics, subscriptions, donations and paid access

The "monetization descriptors" a Listed Server checks give a good picture of what Hypixel treats as normal: donations and tips, subscriptions, paid access, ads, cosmetics-only purchases, gameplay-affecting purchases and paid random items.

Section 4.1 applies to all of them. Monetization "must be truthful and lawful", with no deceptive pricing, hidden fees or misleading claims, and you must disclose your refund policy and key purchase terms before checkout. Section 7.7 of the EULA adds the total price, renewal terms and material limitations before purchase. It also makes you the merchant of record, responsible for pricing, fulfillment, customer service, refunds where the law requires them, and taxes.

For cosmetics, section 7 (written for Listed Servers) bans two things: selling "official-looking" cosmetics that could confuse players about origin or endorsement, and blocking official cosmetics to push sales of your own. The EULA branding rule (section 7.3) applies to every server and forbids using Hypixel branding in a way that suggests official status. Cosmetics with your server's own look stay clear of both.

Gameplay-affecting items and the audience rating

Hytale is more permissive here than Minecraft, whose guidelines rule out paid competitive advantages (see what you can sell on a Minecraft server). For Teen and Mature servers, section 4.3 says: "Gameplay-affecting purchases are allowed but must be clearly tagged/disclosed". An armor kit or an XP booster can go on sale, as long as the buyer knows before paying that it changes gameplay.

For All Ages servers, section 4.2 lists two restrictions: no paid random items, and ads only if "family-safe/certified". It says nothing about gameplay-affecting items. Since the tagging rule is written for Teen and Mature, the safe reading is to tag those items whatever your rating.

The audience rating is mandatory for Listed Servers. If your server is not in Discovery, the policy doesn't say which rating applies. Go by who actually plays: if kids are on your server, following the All Ages rules is the safer choice, listed or not.

Paid random items (loot boxes, crates, capsules) are banned on All Ages servers. On Teen and Mature servers they are allowed under section 5:

  1. Show odds as numbers. Labels like "common" or "rare" are not enough.
  2. Disclose duplicate rules, any pity or guarantee mechanics, and any time-limited odds changes.
  3. Provide a place inside the server where players can check the current odds at any time.
  4. Publish the expected spend to get each top-tier outcome, each featured outcome and a full set, plus the maximum spend when a guarantee exists, all calculated from the published odds.
  5. Keep odds tables and their change history for 12 months and hand them over on request.

Section 7.9 of the EULA goes further: no sales to users identified as minors, a clear purchase confirmation and transaction history, and items that cannot be redeemed for money or sold outside the server.

A quick example: a $2.00 crate key with a 2% chance at the top prize and no guarantee takes 50 openings on average. The expected spend is $100.00, and that is the number players need to see.

No "double random"

Section 6 bans mechanics where a payment leads to one random draw that feeds another. The policy's own examples:

  • buy a crate, get a random chance at "key shards", combine the shards, spin a wheel;
  • buy a loot box, get a random chance at a "ticket", use it to roll again;
  • buy a random pack that yields a random amount of a currency only usable for gacha.

Multi-stage randomness stays allowed when no payment is involved at any stage.

Banned on every server

Section 4.1(d) bans, on all servers, sexual content, NFTs, speculative crypto tokens, play-to-earn token schemes, similar blockchain-based schemes and real-money gambling.

Section 7.8 of the EULA defines gambling broadly: staking money, virtual currency or items of value on games of chance, skin or item wagering, raffles, lotteries, sweepstakes with a required purchase, sports or event betting, and any feature that cashes out game items or currency for money.

Accepting cryptocurrency as a payment method for something otherwise allowed is fine.

Revenue share: 0% until 2028

Section 8 sets Hypixel's revenue share at 0% "for the first 2 years (until January 13th 2028)". The EULA says that, for now, no reporting or payment is required, and that a future rate above zero only applies to revenue earned after the change, never retroactively.

The policy doesn't say what the rate will be after 2028. It says the rate may vary with the level of services, oversight or infrastructure Hypixel provides, and that future optional services may carry separate fees disclosed in advance.

Payment providers

The policy names no payment provider and requires no particular store platform. Section 4.1(c) asks you to comply with consumer protection, advertising, tax and payment laws. EULA section 7.7 adds that your payment processors must be "lawful and appropriate for your audience", including protections for minors where they apply, and that chargebacks and disputes are your responsibility.

For paid random items, EULA section 7.9 makes you responsible for complying with the laws and regulatory guidance "in the regions where your players are located". If you sell crates to players in several countries, check each country's rules, or talk to a lawyer.

What happens if you break the rules

Section 9 lists the possible actions: warnings, corrective action plans, removal from Discovery, suspension of server tokens or keys, and account-level actions. Hypixel weighs severity, harm, repeat history, how quickly you respond and good-faith efforts to comply.
